Tēnā koe. Nau mai ki Te Whanake.
Welcome to Te Whanake Online. This series of online modules complements Te Kākano, the first in the Te Whanake series of textbooks for learning Te Reo. For each module, you will find it an advantage if you have studied the relevant chapter in the textbook (Te Whanake 1, Te Kākano), the accompanying CD and the study guide (Te Kākano Pukapuka Tātaki). More information on the Te Whanake series can be found on the bilingual website
http://www.tewhanake.maori.nzThere are
fifteen modules in all and each one begins with an animated movie which you should watch and listen to carefully several times. You’ll meet some new friends in these movies, Te Hererīpene, Mīria, Eruera, Tarati, Wiremu and little Neihana. You are able to add the Māori text and the English translation to the movies so that you can understand and learn the new language you are hearing. Each movie will introduce the new language of the module.
After watching and listening to the movie, you should try completing the activities and exercises, which are based on the movie. You’ll find these listed on the left of your screen. The activities listed first are easier than those that are listed later but you can choose to do them in any order you like. If you are new to Te Reo we recommend you start with the easier activities first.
Along the top of your screen we have put links to resources you might find helpful at any point as you work through the modules. These include:
- A number practise program where you can practice anything to do with numbers including, money, dates and even telephone numbers.
- A discussion forum where you can meet others learning Te Reo
- An online dictionary where you can look up words that are new to you to learn their meaning
